IMPORTANT ADELAIDE FUNCTION VENUE UPDATE 24th December 2020
I hope everyone is having a happy Christmas and New Year’s period. Following the lockdown late November, Adelaide venues were sent into a spin leading into what most were hoping would be the busiest time of year. It was a difficult time for venues and customers with restrictions and requirements changing so frequently. However, we are all grateful now to be back operating as close to normal (“Covid normal”) as possible.
Here’s the update on where things stand currently for private functions and venues in Adelaide. For a quick reference of all current public activity restrictions, here’s link to the complete public activities table provided by the government 15th DECEMBER PUBLIC ACTIVITIES TABLE
PRIVATE FUNCTIONS IN A LICENSED VENUE IN ADELAIDE
200 People, maximum
1 Person per 2 square metres
Dancing is permitted
Standing consumption of food and beverage is permitted
No communal food or beverage areas and no shared utensils (see below for further details regarding food service)
Contact tracing is required and Covid Marshal is required
Private functions include weddings, funerals, parties or any other function which is by invite only that is held at licensed premises. The function must be in a designated area which has no public access and where possible separate bathroom facilities from the rest of the venue.
GENERAL TRADE FOR RESTAURANTS, PUBS, BARS AND VENUES
No limit on capacity (except based on square meter size of venue)
1 Person per 2 square meters
Standing consumption of food and beverage is permitted
Can sit at the bar if no food is being prepared

No communal food or beverage areas and no shared utensils
Contact tracing is required and Covid Marshal is required
There are strict still rules regarding the service of cocktail style finger food and shared platters/grazing tables. Here’s what the Government Document says: FAQ Government doc (Step-3 05.08.2020 LINK HERE)
Can I open the buffet bar / salad bar?
No. Communal food service areas are not permitted to be opened, including buffet and salad bars. This includes both self-service and/or staff serving food.
Can I serve share plates (e.g. tapas, pizza, bread) at tables?
You can serve share plates to a table if it is to be shared amongst people who are seated as part of the same group.
Can I serve platters/boards?
As above, you can serve shared platters/boards to a table if it is to be shared amongst people who are seated as part of the same group. For example, you cannot have a platter available for all guests attending an event, but you can have a platter available for people seated at a table together that are part of the same group.
Can I hold a cocktail function?
Yes you can hold a cocktail style function, however, the way food is served cannot be as large platters available to all guests or platters of food handed around by staff. This is considered similar to providing communal food from a service area. Cocktail style food can be served to a table if it is to be shared amongst people who are seated as part of the same group.
(It can also be served individually plated. Which means individually plated finger food items can be handed to guests who are standing. They cannot help themselves to a platter of finger food options, the staff need to hand the plate to the customer)
Are the rules different for private functions?
No, the above rules apply for private functions at licensed premises or other public venues (e.g. weddings, funerals, birthdays, other ceremonies).
If you are making your enquiry to an Adelaide function venue via Event Scene, you might find that the venue response time is still a little slower than normal as some venues have only re-opened part time. Please be patient.
Thank you for your continued support during this time for my business Event Scene and the Adelaide restaurants and function venues I work with!
Much Love,
Coree
